If you already got EE2, I would recommend you to try Unofficial Patch 1.5 (developed by me): Oh and when playing EE2 I did really miss prophets! There's other new features I've missed like spies (pretty useful), capturing buildings (slow but also useful), and paratroops (very effective in large numbers, perhaps almost too effective). Buildings are destroyed very quickly when attacked, and walls are nothing compared to EE1. I find in general EE2 moves too quickly, even on slower settings. In EE1 it was actually a challenge to gather the resources to advance, especially in the early game. This is all fine, but on normal game speed it's insanely quick to produce tech points once you have a few territories established, so the epochs pass by pretty quick and you don't get the chance to be in the game so much. Tech points are used to research technologies, and to advance to new epochs. Also you can only build up to a maximum number of certain building types per territory, which is just arbitrary and very annoying when it comes to anti-air. I don't like the territory system, as it means the map is no longer a giant free-for-all like in EE1 with random settlements popping up and being fought over, and it seems like you no longer really get the challenge of having an AI randomly sending a giant army that threatens your main capitol. I've never really been bothered to use the citizen manager or PiP - so they might be decent but idk. The last one of these I really like, but the others are a bit of a mixed bag for me. It still amazes me even now that they managed to create such an all-round masterpiece, with the only thing that really shows its age being the graphics.ĮE2 has richer graphics that are pleasing to the eye, and it introduced some extra features such as citizen manager, picture-in-picture, territories, tech points, unique units/buildings, to name a few. The graphics in EE1 are definitely of their time as you'd expect, but honestly I struggle to find faults with the gameplay, and the campaigns are second to none. Having played both 1 and 2, I think you should go for the original. So: EE1 to have fun quickly, EE2 if you're looking for the more modern UI and have time to actually understand the game. EE2 in default settings depends a lot on players speed (army size / number of buildings is worth more than managing the army during battles), however, this can be tweaked by the custom game pace option which allows you to change literally everything, starting from production time, units health, ending on time needed for advancing the epoch).

However, once they learn everything (or most of things) in EE2 they might favor it over other games, because it gives so much control, hotkeys for literally everything, that they actually feel like the game depends on their actions. EE1 would be a better choice for players who don't like to learn a lot, instead of actually playing. There's so many things to explore, that sometimes it feels like too much, and people give up and move to some easier games. EE2 is a little bit harder for new players to start with. citizens manager, picture-in-picture window, crowns / territory system, buildings that can launch ICBMs, Anti-Missile system, cycle units production). I prefer EE2 the most because of graphics that didn't age that bad, a lot of features that are missing in EE1 and other games (e.g. The games are similar when it comes of the idea, but definitely different in mechanics, strategies, etc.
